Or 3 Innovative Improvements to Our Safety Programs

As Menard Group USA evolves as a ground improvement company, we know our safety initiatives need to be carefully evaluated & regularly upgraded, too. 

With our commitment to always STEP UP for safety, we know it's time to STEP UP these programs and raise the bar again. Our Safety Department has made some recent changes that are yielding tangible results!

The Menard Group USA Safety Committee began three years ago to give all MeNERDs the opportunity to engage directly with our Safety Management, share their perspective from different departments and help shape our safety policies & procedures. Eight to ten people are selected to participate on the Committee for up to one year each, with the chance to directly impact their own safety, as well as that of their co-workers. The Committee has also helped us structure some of our most successful safety programs, including our Weekly Safety Leader.

What innovative improvements are in the works for our Safety Committee and programs? 

  • Getting rid of the elephant in the room. Our Safety Department used to be members of the Safety Committee, but now they will act as a coordinators & resources to the Committee. We believe this will encourage more honest & open communication within the Committee and make it more comfortable for our Field Crews to discuss sensitive issues among their peers before taking their ideas & suggestions to our Safety Department.
  • Giving our Weekly Safety Leader a promotion. The Weekly Safety Leader is a volunteer from the project crew who assists the Superintendent with submitting "good catches", conducting the morning safety meeting and leading Stretch and Flex. We can't give it away just yet, but we'll be challenging them to lead their crew to be even more observant & engaged in the coming months.
  • Texting the Qs to get the As. On the first Monday of the month, our Safety Department texts a question to each person on our Field Crew, who is able to respond via text as well. The initial response has been very positive with a majority of the Crew replying. By giving every person a direct platform to share their thoughts and opinions on a specific topic, valuable input is now flowing freely!

By increasing our engagement in new ways, we hope to strengthen our safety culture. We think these changes will inspire our team to continue keeping themselves & their crews safe.
