Taking a Stand on Safe Working Platforms

or Why We're Supportive of Industry Organizations Reducing Risk

Working platforms provide a stable area for our deep foundation equipment to operate from, yet currently there are no standard processes and procedures to guide general contractors, construction managers and owners on how to safely establish and maintain them.

Hopefully, that is about to change!

Recently, several industry organizations came together to release a joint statement regarding their support for a safe working platform standard evaluation procedure. The participating organizations include:

  • ADSC-IAFD - The International Association of Foundation Drilling is a US-based industry organization for deep foundation construction subcontractors specializing in drilled shafts, anchored earth retention and micropiles.
  • DFI - Deep Foundations Institute is an international association of contractors, engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, academics and owners in the deep foundations industry.
  • PDCA - The Pile Driving Contractors Association is an organization of pile driving contractors that advocates the increased use of driven piles for deep foundations and earth retention systems.

In the joint statement, the organizations anticipate the cooperation and honesty of the engineering and design community when making recommendations or sharing project data related to working platforms. They also pledge to assist with communicating the new standards internally with their members, as well as externally with relevant outside industry groups.

That the mechanism for ensuring safe working platforms as an established policy lies in three areas: recognition of the need for proper analysis and preparation of working platforms by controlling entities and acknowledgement of responsibility for such tasks; common use of appropriate contract language for prime contracts and subcontracts; and for the present, informal enforcement through industry consensus.

Menard Group USA fully endorses their efforts! A well-designed working platform is necessary for all of our projects across the country - not only to ensure both the safety of our team, but also the quality of our performance.

We applaud these organizations for giving this issue a strong voice and direction, and we support their efforts going forward.
