June was the National Safety Council's National Safety Month, and Menard was ready to support this annual safety "holiday" and focus on reducing the leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities.
Every week, our job sites engaged in a Toolbox Talk on a specific safety-related topic. This was a chance for our crews to share their own experiences and stories about the topic, and how it could affect us on the job.
Of course, the most familiar topic we covered was Falls. Did you know that falls are the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths - and construction workers are seven times more at risk than those in other industries?
The next topic was Fatigue. Getting the right amount of sleep - that's seven to nine hours every night - is crucial to being a safe and productive crew member. Not getting enough sleep can result in things like depression, obesity, cardio vascular disease and even higher numbers of accidents.
The third focus was Hazard Recognition. We want everyone on the job site to be aware of their surroundings and participate in a functional system of openly identifying, addressing and correcting hazards.
The last topic we focused on was Impairment. We want every MeNERD to be at full attention when on our job sites - not only for him or herself, but also for everyone they are working with on the site. No level of impairment is a safe level.
During our Toolbox Talks, we also discussed how we could pay more attention to each topic at home - where we tend to turn our safety brain off - and how our health and well-being off the job can drastically impact our health and well-being on the job.
Following the breakout sessions , the team welcomed guest speaker Joel Feldman, founder of EndDD.org, who lost his daughter, Casey, to a distracted driver. Joel spoke about his mission for all drivers to work together to end Distracted Driving in order to keep us all safe on the roads. His profound and heartfelt message hit home with the entire Menard Group USA team and touched everyone on a personal level.
Awards were given to our four 2019 Safety Champions with Scott Forrester bringing home the coveted Safety Boot Award!
Awards were also presented to the Green Idea Winners, Justin Labrozzi -1st place, Jason Powers - 2nd place and Mark Bibby - 3rd place. The Green Idea Awards were based on the concept of encouraging all employees to think about how the company can minimize waste, save resources, and reduce our carbon footprint as we go about our work.
Congrats to all the Winners!
