Steering Towards Safer Drivers

or How We're Using Smith Driving System to Up the MeNERD Driving Game

If you could implement or participate in a program that would help your team make better decisions when driving, ultimately keeping you all safer at work and at home, would you do it?

Menard did!

Smith Driving System was developed in 1948 by Harold Smith, and it teaches experienced drivers how to avoid collisions. The Smith System is used in 100 countries around the world and holds over classes annually for over 250,000 drivers.

These aren't driving classes - they are training sessions that examine your driving habits and help you create safer, more effective ones. Participants are put in different driving scenarios and then coached on the best way to see, think and act their way through the situation using special "keys," or easy to recall tips.

Every MeNERD will spend an entire day training on the Smith System and focusing on these keys. The day is divided into half a day of classroom learning and the other half of hands-on driving with a coach. The class concludes with a short quiz.

Our team members who have completed the class understand what safe driving really is and take a lot of valuable knowledge with them to use at work and at home. Our management is fulfilling their promise to focus on Safety 24/7 by providing this as part of the training here at Menard.

The big win isn't just better decision making for our team. For Menard Group USA as a company, it's also the results others like UPS and AT&T have seen using the Smith System: reduced insurance claims, less fuel consumption, fewer vehicle repairs and a safer team out on the road.

The Smith System website shares that on-the-job crashes last year resulted in 700,000 damaged vehicles, 239,000 injuries and 1,600 deaths. Menard is working to improve those numbers, and we're committed to improving the driving habits of our team!
