I'm no geotechnical engineer, but on a site visit near Lille, France, we drilled into this fascinating clay. The auger would come out of the ground coated in it, and it was plastic under pressure, so it would form a perfect impression of the surface of the tool that was visible when you peeled it off. But wherever you broke it, it would flake in layers like uncooked puff pastry. I brought some back in my carry-on, wrapped in bubble wrap...when I get the chance, I want to fire it in a kiln.
