Improving Infrastructure in NYC

or How We Worked With NYCDOT at Harlem River Drive

When the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) needed to improve aging infrastructure on an existing roadway in busy Manhattan to improve traffic flow, they tapped into our ground improvement expertise to support soft soils on the proposed bridge approaches.

Harlem River Drive runs along the west bank of the river from East Harlem to Inwood as a four-lane parkway. The most recent version of the roadway was completed during the early 1960s. Menard Group USA was contracted to provide ground improvement for a portion over East 127th Street as part of an overall improvement project. Not only was this area accident-prone, the old roadway was proving to be a bottleneck area for waterfront development.

Working alongside sister company Nicholson Construction and design engineers at GEI Consultants, we developed a solution using 12" diameter Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) rigid inclusions. After installing close to 700 CMC rigid inclusions, the soft soil was improved and ready for the approaches.

Active communication between everyone on the design team and site crew helped us successfully handle issues like large obstructions, existing utilities and existing bridge foundations.

This was our first time working on a public New York City project, which is significant for us. Even though we encountered many challenges, in the end we produced a quality product, and everyone was happy with the results.

Menard's portion of the project began in 2017 and recently wrapped up. The overall project is expected to be finished in 2019.
